Nano Valley Consortium (NVC)

A Strategic Private-Public Partnership:  Nano Valley Consortium (NVC)
A Member Project of the National Nanotechology Manufacturing Center (NNMC)

The Nano Valley Consortium (NVC) is member-based group comprised of commercial, academic, government agencies and organizations that work together to identify, develop, manage, and implement nanotechnology projects that benefit both military and commercial purposes.  It operates within NNMC as its “agent-parent,” which manages and facilitates Consortium activities.

The Consortium is not intended as a social network, but rather as a project-focused group with specific objectives and measured outcomes.  Membership offers the opportunity to work with others for early access to research and/or early transitioning of technology resulting in rapid market entry, leverage research investment, greater access to facilities and equipment, and broader testing and evaluation capabilities.

As an added benefit, you may find members to be your future customer, supplier, partner.

Partnership Model:
The Consortium provides a cooperative environment to identify opportunities and problem areas shared by the Army and the partners.  ARDEC is the lead Research, Development and Engineering Center (RDEC) for the Army and is this Consortium’s primary customer.

  • Identify common areas of strategic importance
  • Develop projects for dual use applications through teams
  • Build relationships that provide capabilities or assets to accelerate technology fielding and commercialization
  • Augments or enhances existing projects
  • Offers technology insertion windows

DEFINITIONS: Consortiums – Pick One
a.
A cooperative arrangement among groups or institutions.
b. A group of separate companies that come together to undertake an enterprise or transaction that is beyond the means of any one member.
c. A consortium is an association of two or more individuals, companies, organizations or governments (or any combination of these entities) with the objective of participating in a common activity or pooling their resources for achieving a common goal.
d. Consortiums are cooperative groups of organizations with a similar mission or purpose who pool their purchasing power to improve service, time to market, and quality and drive down pricing. By participating in consortiums, organizations can approach suppliers with a much larger purchasing volume. In return, the suppliers offer better values to the consortium members.
Consortium is a Latin word, meaning 'partnership, association or society' and derives from consors 'partner', itself from con- 'together' and sors 'fate', meaning owner of means or comrade.

The Nanomanufacturing &
Dual-use Commercialization Conference
November 3, 4 & 5 , 2008
Savannah Marriott Riverfront, Savannah, Georgia

The Key Note speaker for our fall conference will be Cynthia E. Gonsalves. She will set the theme for the “Nanomanufacturing & Dual Use Commercialization Conference” to be held November 3, 4 & 5, 2008 at the Riverfront Marriott Hotel in Savannah Georgia.

Ms. Gonsalves is scheduled to speak November 4th on the importance and future of the Department of Defense Technology Transition program. A main point of the presentation is how that program relates to the manufacturing infrastructure of our country. Promoting a sustainable nanomanufacturing infrastructure is the primary goal of NNMC.

Mrs. Gonsalves is the Acting Director of the Office of Technology Transition. In this position, she has oversight of the Manufacturing Technology Program, Defense Production Act Title III Program, and Independent Research and Development Program; she is also the Associate Director for Technology Transfer and Transition. As Associate Director, she has oversight responsibility for the DOD Technology Transfer Program, the Technology Transition Initiative, and the North American Technology and Industrial Base Organization (NATIBO). She provides guidance and develops plans to implement and improve the DOD technology transfer and transition programs to ensure coherent, although decentralized programs. She has developed DOD-wide implementation policy and technology transfer and intellectual property information systems. (read more on Ms Gonsalves Here

Ms. Gonsalves’ strategic position and exceptional experience makes her presentation of vital importance to everyone in the dual use commercialization arena. In the frame work of the NNMC conference her message is augmented to reflect on the emerging nanomanufacturing industry’s concerns and goals.

The “Nanomanufacturing & Dual Use Commercialization Conference” is targeted at industry and government advanced technology officers who are either experiencing or can contribute to solving the gaps and road blocks to nanocommercialization. Attendees range from the innovators and Tech Transfer officers into the materials and equipment suppliers and through to the marketing organizations and potential end users.

NNMC Hosts 1st Nano Valley Consortium Kick-Off Meeting

Swainsboro, GA … October 22, 2007… On October 18th & 19th, the National Nanotechnology Manufacturing Center held the Kick-Off meeting for the Nano Valley Consortium in Swansboro. The main purpose of the event was to inform potential member companies about the Nano Valley Consortium which is the first of its kind. The Consortium was organized by the NNMC in conjunction with the Army’s Picatinny Arsenal in New Jersey.  Its purpose is to provide an effective teaming environment for commercializing nano research for both military and commercial markets.  It also will allow members to know in advance about government contracting opportunities and shortens their time in getting contracts and funding completed. Barbara Stafford, Executive Director of the NNMC introduced speakers as did Dr. Diane Lewis, President of Georgia NanoFAB.

Major companies from all across America, met on Thursday, October 18th at Flat Creek Lodge and Friday October 19th at East Georgia College. Approximately 70 people attended, representing such companies as DuPont, Fujifilm Dimatix, PPG, Lucent,  Imerys, Chevron Mining, Milliken, General Dynamics of Canada and many more. Major universities were also represented such as the University of Florida, Rutgers, GA Tech, Harvard, GA Southern, NJIST, and Penn State.  Several officials representing the U. S. military, and particularly the Army's Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center were present as well to discuss opportunities and needs for the warfighter.

Friday’s keynote speaker was Terry Medley, the Director of Global Compliance for DuPont who co-work the recently published Environmental Nano-risk Framework. Dr. Ron McNeill of the Univ. of Illinois reviewed a U.S. Dept. of Commerce year-long study he had recently completed on Commercialization.  Numerous officials from the U. S. Army spoke concerning the opportunities and advantages of nanotechnology applications. Other speakers updated attendees on various subjects relating to nanotechnology commercialization.

This was the second major meeting the Center has held in Swainsboro this year.  Earlier in April, the Center held its Inaugural Symposium highlighting nanotechnology research from universities in the southeast.  Local officials on hand to meet and greet the guests included sponsors Andy Riley president of the SECJDA and Bill Rogers, president of the Chamber of Commerce.  Georgia Representative Butch Parrish and Senator Jack Hill also attended. The Center was originally founded as a result of generous support in the house appropriations and senate armed services committees by members of Georgia’s delegation which led to FY06 funding for the National Nanotechnology Manufacturing Center.  The Center was established in Swainsboro, GA to engage rural high-tech manufacturing capability in service of the warfighter.
